The Seiko automatic watch collection is actually powered by the now well-known 7S26 21 Jewel automatic movements. Seiko automatic watches power themselves by the motion of your body. Contrary to the Seiko Kinetic watch collection, there is an automatic winding mechanism but then it does not need any hacking or hand winding to get the watch started. Automatic movements are a subset of mechanical movements that, when worn daily, do not need to be wound. Every time the watch is worn, an oscillating weight in the movement winds the mainspring, thus ensuring the mainspring remains fully wound. The Seiko automatic watch needs just to be set at the correct time and given a shake to charge up and gives you the most accurate and reliable time with a power reserve up to 40 hours.

However, when worn daily, these automatic watches will never need to be wound again. If you do not wear an automatic for a day, it will still be running the next morning, but it is recommended to wind it by turning the crown about 20 times. This will guarantee the watch is fully ‘charged’.

On the other hand, If an automatic watch is allowed to run down fully, as in when it is shipped, simply turn the crown clockwise 20 to 30 times to give the mainspring a full wind. You can not over wind an automatic movement as there is an internal clutch mechanism and the crown will simply keep turning but the watch will not wind any further.
